Monamy, Peter
English Painter, 1681-1749
English painter. It seems likely that his family origins and name were French. The Painter-Stainers' Company records that he was apprenticed as a house painter to William Clarke from 1696, but by 1710 he had become a marine artist, filling the gap in the market left by the death of Willem van de Velde the younger in 1707. Most of his subsequent career was devoted to careful imitations of van de Velde's style (and, in some cases, of particular pictures), by which, according to Vertue, 'he distinguished himself and came into reputation'. He maintained his links with the Painter-Stainers, of which he had been made a freeman in 1703 Related Paintings of Monamy, Peter :. | British ships in Lisborn Harbour | The Royal yacht Royal Caroline in a Storm | The British Fleet Sailing into Lisbon Harbor | A royal yacht and other shipping off the coast | A small English man-o-war proceeding down channel off Deal, the white cliffs in the distance | Related Artists: Chigot EugeneFrench history painter and marine specialist , 1860-1890
HOGARTH, WilliamBritish Painter and Printmaker, 1697-1764
English painter and engraver. He played a crucial part in establishing an English school of painting, both through the quality of his painting and through campaigns to improve the status of the artist in England. He also demonstrated that artists could become independent of wealthy patrons by publishing engravings after their own paintings. Thomas King HannaAmetican
